In the 2nd round, Hayes knocked Armstrong down with a left hook to the jaw, for a seven-count. Armstrong arose dazed, and was put down for an eight-count with a right to the jaw. Hayes attempt to finish Armstrong was wild, however, he eventually dropped Armstrong for a third time, for a nine-count. Armstrong rose wobbly, and walked into a left hook that put him down for the count.
