Coggins put on a disinterested performance, letting Nibert decisively win the 1st round. In the 2nd round, he landed a solid right hand that put Coggins down. The referee, feeling that Coggins was not trying, did not bother to count and ruled the fight a no-decision. A subsequent investigation by the California State Athletic Commission determined that Coggins was not trying, and the two were rematched the following week.
