  • Date: 1956-10-25
  • Location: Arena, Boston, Massachusetts, USA
  • Referee: Eddie Bradley
Heavyweight Nino Valdes of Havana, Cuba, hoped today he had earned a bout Dec. 4 in London against Dick Richardson with his third round knockout of Bob Woodall of Boston. Valdes needed the victory over Woodall last night at the Arena to be considered for the $10,000 purse at stake In England. The Cuban, weighing 210, flattened Woodall, 213, with a vicious left hand uppercut at 2.51 of the third round of a scheduled 10-round bout. Both fighters appeared cautious during the opening round. In the second the lanky Valdes opened up with a right hand that staggered the Boston heavyweight. Valdes followed with a bruising left that put Woodall down for an eight count. The 21-year-old fighter tried to cover but was decked again when Valdes rushed him, tossing another stinging right to Woodall's unprotected head. Woodall still appeared strong for the third round but Valdes ended it with a sweeping left uppercut that sent the Boston fighter sprawling through the ropes.
