McDonald, of Montana, was billed as the champion of the Northwest Territory. He was an experienced fighter who had previously been in the ring with both James J. Corbett and Herbert (Maori) Slade, among others, but was considerably smaller than Sullivan, the world's champion. It was a "relaxed" fight that ended in a draw after four rounds, the first time in Sullivan's career that a bout had been declared as such.
