In a bizarre situation, Cuillo's hand was cut either days earlier in a knife fight and it had not healed. Or, as another story goes, his hand was accidentally cut with scissors by his trainer while getting his hand wrapped right before Kates fight. Regardless, during the fight it began to bleed and blood leaked from his glove, down his arm and ended up all over both fighters, confusion set in for the referee until he was able to determine the cause thus a TKO win for Kates.
