Gomez knocked Fiorello down in the opening seconds of the bout with a left. In the final seconds of the final round, Fiorello knocked Gomez down with a left hand. Gomez took a nine count, and unaware that Fiorello hadn't gone to a neutral corner, Gomez was pounded after the referee wiped off his gloves. The referee eventually broke the two, and Gomez came back strongly at the bell. The decision, despite being split, was well received.

Gomez substituted for Jimmy McDonough, who was ill.
