- Date: 1928-04-23
- Location: St. Nicholas Arena, New York, New York, USA
"Ed Tiernan, Astoria middleweight, hammered out a victory over Marty Farrell, veteran Harlem boxer, in a slam-bang 6 round fight which served as the semifinal. Tiernan's clean hitting, particularly in the last 3 rounds, when he repeatedly rocked Farrell, earned the decision for the Astoria youngster. Farrell made a spectacular showing against Tiernan in the first 3 rounds, but over tha last half of the battle the veteran was out-fought. Tiernan weighed 153 1/2 and Farrell 159." - NY Times April 24, 1928.
Article from a NY paper: "...the fans got interested in the second when Tiernan was clipped with a right to the jaw and sent to the canvas for the count of nine. Farrell was sent down in the fourth with a right cross, but came right up. It looked like the finish of Marty but Tiernan tired and was finding the going hard at the end of the session. Tiernan outboxed his clever opponent the rest of the way and deserved the decision. Tiernan gives the impression that his hard fighting as an amateur took a lot out of him and he acts like a boy who is fighting under a severe strain."
