Ralph Jones 150 lbs lost to Johnny Saxton 150 lbs by SD in round 10 of 10

Welterweight Johnny Saxton got a good scare from unknown Ralph (Tiger) Jones of Yonkers, N.Y., last night before emerging with his 32d straight victory in a nationally televised fight at St. Nicholas Arena. The unbeaten former Golden Gloves champion from Brooklyn gained a split decision by a matter of two points. The deciding vote was cast by Judge Joe Agnello, who gave six points to Saxton and four to Jones after calling it even in rounds,5-5. Referee Petey Scalzo gave six rounds to Saxton and four to Jones, but Judge Jack Gordon scored it 5-4 in favor of Jones and called one round even. Thus, Agnello’s card decided the issue. There were no knockdowns, although Saxton appeared to have his opponent in trouble several times as he uncorked hard left hooks to the head and body. Each fighter weighed 150 ¼ pounds.
