Romero knocked Martinez down in the 5th round with a left hand, for a two-count. Romero scored a second knockdown in the 9th round, when he floored Martinez for a nine-count with a right hand. The San Diego Union felt Romero won the bout, though noted that he landed several low blows which cost him points, and also spent a lot of time fighting off the ropes in the middle rounds, while not scoring often.
