Willi Besmanoff 189 lbs lost to Yvon Durelle 177 lbs by UD in round 10 of 10

Yvon Durelle met Willie Besmanoff in a nationally televised Wednesday night featured attraction originating from the Olympic Stadium for promoter Nick Londes. The fight drew 1,044 fans who paid $1,762. Durelle, a lighheavy, spotted Besmanoff twelve pounds in weight, plus reach and height, but carried the fight all the way on his backpeddling opponent. Besmanoff's strategy was to back off and box Durelle with his good left jab. This worked well for the early part of the bout. However, instead of Besmanoff getting stronger in the middle rounds it was Durelle. Yvon repeatedly shook up Besmanoff with uppercuts in close and at range scored with hooks and overhand rights. The verdict in favor of Durelle was unanimous. Referee Tom Briscoe scored the bout 47-44, Judges Jack Asperry and Ed Wagonlander, 46-45 and 47-38 respectively.
