Ray had Mars trapped along the ropes on the verge of a knockout in the 6th round, before the bell ended the round. The Cincinnati Enquirer had Ray a clear winner, giving him eight rounds. Both the Enquirer and the Cincinnati Post felt that Mars fought well outside, with the Post feeling that he outscored Ray. Both papers were critical of Mars clinching and holding, with the Post who was favorable of Mars performance, noting that in their reasoning of a draw decision.

This was Mars first appearance since he suffered a broken jaw in a knockout loss to Blockie Richards in Dayton.
