Lowry knocked Dempsey down in the 2nd round, and had him hurt at the bell to end the 3rd round. Dempsey appeared to be holding up under Lowry's punishing blows, when he was sent reeling into the ropes at the end of the 5th round by a right to the abdomen. The bell rang before Lowry could follow up, and in the 6th round Dempsey came out for the round, and without a punch being landed collapsed to the canvas in pain from the blow to the stomach. The referee stopped the bout.
