Gus Lesnevich 181 lbs lost to Bruce Woodcock 192 lbs by KO at 1:40 in round 8 of 10

  • Date: 1946-09-17
  • Location: Harringay Arena, Harringay, London, United Kingdom
  • Referee: Moss Deyong

Bruce Woodcock, 192-pounds, fought his best fight when he knocked out Gus Lesnevich, light-heavyweight champion of the world, weighing 181 1/2 pounds, with a perfect right to the jaw after opening by scoring with straight lefts and a right to the heart. The kayo came half way through the eighth round of a 10-round contest before another packed arena staged at Harringay Arena. In the eighth Woodcock came out of his corner with a determined effort to end matters, and the fighting blood of the Yorkshire man came to the fore. He forced Lesnevich all around the ring and meted out heavy punishment. After scoring with several lefts to the face, Bruce shot a short right to the jaw, which did not travel more than 12 inches and Lesnevich staggered back and crumpled to the canvas on all fours. Referee Moss Deyong counted over the fallen champion who gamely tried to rise at eight, but sank down back on the canvas, slowly rising after the fatal "out" had been tolled. [John S.
