Gus Lesnevich 163 lbs lost to Young Corbett III 159 lbs by TKO in round 5 of 10

  • Date: 1937-03-12
  • Location: Dreamland Auditorium, San Francisco, California, USA
  • Referee: Toby Irwin

Referee Toby Irwin stopped the fight after one and a half minutes of milling in the fifth round of a scheduled ten-round bout due to a torn forehead that was a maze of blood. Corbett had just opened a five-inch gash over Lesnevich's left eye. In the first round, Corbett opened a smaller but almost as nasty a wound over his opponent's right eye. "He butted me," cried Lesnevich as the second wound gushed open. "No, no, lad, it was a clean blow," said Irwin as he halted the fight and raised Corbett's arm. Lesnevich's seconds bellowed, "Foul! foul!" but Irwin explained that a slashing left by Corbett had preceded a clinch-and not Corbett's head-did the damage. An examination of Corbett's head after the fight revealed no marks.

The crowd of 6,000 fans were stunned by the sudden end of the fight. Hundreds of fans booed Irwin, but up until the end, Corbett had all the edge, having garnered each of the preceding rounds on points. [The Sacremento Bee]
