Taylor sent Whitlock down again in the 3rd round with another right hand, though referee Van ruled it a slip. In the 6th round, Whitlock was cut over his left eye. The cut eventually led to the stoppage, after the referee investigated the cut three times. Taylor led by three points on Van's card.
