Ace Hudkins lost to Russie LeRoy by NWS in round 10 of 10
- Date: 1924-08-29
- Location: Mizzou Park, Sioux City, Iowa, USA
Sioux City Daily Tribune: "In the estimation of the writer, Leroy won the fight. Not by a city block or any such margin, but he certainly deserves the edge, not only on boxing, but on 'socking.' True, Ace swung some mean punches, but where did most of them land? On the Fargo, N. D., boy's hips, shoulders, and the top of his head! "On the other hand, Leroy, an orthodox fighter, was wasting mighty little. He caught Hudkins time and again on the chin with short and sure punches. But Ace is tough. He doesn't go down like the average human. If he wasn't dizzy in the second round, he probably never will be. The fans marveled at the way he soaked up legitimate kayos and still kept going, battling like a tiger." Sioux City Journal: "In the greatest fight ever held in Sioux City, Ace Hudkins and Russie Leroy, two young lightweights, battled 10 furious rounds to a draw in the first half of the double windup that featured Tom Brisbane's boxing show here Friday night. ... "If the hair-line decision were to be given on the bout, we would give it to Leroy because he landed by far the greater number of clean punches. Hudkins' wonderful ability to take punishment and his aggressiveness, however, offset the point advantage earned by Russie and we feel that a draw is doing neither an injustice. ..."
Newspaper decision in favor of Hudkins from the Lincoln Evening State Journal.
In view of the fact that one Sioux City paper gave LeRoy a clear edge and the other Sioux City paper called it a draw, but leaned toward a "hairline decision" for LeRoy, it seems fair to call it a win for Leroy.
