Murray staggered Alabama Kid in the 2nd round with a left hook to the jaw. In the 3rd round, after working Murray's body, Alabama Kid shifted his attack to the head and dropped Murray for a nine-count. The Columbus Dispatch reported that the timekeeper had reached the count of ten, while the referee only reached the count of nine. Amidst this controversy, Murray's glove touched the canvas, in effect going down again without being hit. Alabama Kid largely fought a cautious fight, leery of Murray's power. Murray missed many blows, and was hampered by a closed left eye in the later rounds.
