Stankovich threw a right cross immediately after the bell clanged to start the final round, downing Wells. Referee Wilson ruled the blow foul, "saying Washington rules require boxers to step back momentarily after they touch gloves in mid-ring. After the flurry of managers, seconds and other citizens flooded the ring, things were cleared up and the battle went on. Wells went down for a nine count in the second." Tacoma News Tribune

The Seattle Times felt that Stankovich was robbed, and was critical of referee Wilson's performance, as he also scored the fight for Wells.
