Many Canadian newspapers at the time were reporting that World Heavyweight Champion Jack Johnson was in retirement, as he had announced this several times earlier in the year. Palzer's trainer for this fight was Frank Newhouse, former baseball umpire and "noted" conditioner of athletes.

It was a battle between a powerful, iron-chinned bullock of a man and a lean-muscled intelligent boxer of some notable skill.
