The bout was stopped after Pelkey rose at nine at unsteady from a knockdown. According to a story in a Calgary paper, Pelkey's wife asserted that he took this fight only because he was bankrupted by legal fees stemming from the hearings into the death of McCarty.

• A sweeping right on the jaw put Pelkey down and the finisher was a hard right to the back of the head by Smith as Pelkey attempted to clinch.
