Wiggins had an edge through the first eight rounds, and was the aggressor. Smith though hurt Wiggins with body shots in the 1st and 4th rounds, and staggered him with a left hook to the jaw in the 6th round. Beginning in the 9th round, Smith began to hit Wiggins with both hands, as Wiggins began to tire and miss many of his blows. The New Orleans Times-Picayune reported that the referee had to admonish both fighters to fight at times. The New Orleans States called the bout a disappointment and tame.
