Gainer won decisively, according to the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, who scored the bout 9-4-2 for the winner. Gainer effectively used his left hand, jab and hook, to control Fox who looked to counter. Gainer also tied up Fox after landing his left, limiting Fox's counter opportunities. Fox had his best moment in the 14th round, when he attacked a retreating Gainer with both hands, Gainer however persevered and regained control of the action before the end of the round. Fox sustained a cut over his right eye.
