Jack Root 168 lbs beat Charles Kid McCoy 173 lbs by PTS in round 10 of 10
- Date: 1903-04-22
- Location: Light Guard Armory, Detroit, Michigan, USA
- Referee: Bat Masterson
Charles E. ("Parson") Davies, the noted sport, manager of pugilists, promoter of boxing contests, etc., arrived in Louisville yesterday to take charge of "Kid" Broad, who is now under his management.
...
"That story about McCoy's brother using ammonia in his fight with Root is all rot. I have a letter from Bat Masterson, who refereed, saying that the bout was fought fairly. Root simply beat McCoy at his own game and chopped him to pieces."
In a telegram from New York last night it was stated that McCoy's manager, Considine, charges that the bout had been framed up and that Root was to be given the decision on a foul.
Mr. Davies characterized the story as the veriest bosh. "I know Masterson and I know Louie Houseman, Root's manager. Both are thorough sportsmen and on the level at all times. The story is discounted by the fact that Root hammered the life out of McCoy, and no frame-up battle would have been that fierce."
