Frank 'Paddy' Slavin 184 lbs beat Joe McAuliffe 210 lbs by KO in round 2 of 15

  • Date: 1890-09-27
  • Location: Ormonde Club, Walworth, London, United Kingdom
  • Referee: Bernard John Angle

Frank Slavin wins the Police Gazette championship belt.

However, according to Australia's The Referee of Oct. 1, 1890: "The match has been referred to by some journalists, ignorant of sporting laws, as a championship one, but such was not the case. The men simply fought for a purse of £1,000 and a diamond belt given by a well known American journal run by a very cute man."

The North-Eastern Daily Gazette (Middlesbrough, England), Saturday, September 27, 1890.

The contestants were arrested because the authorities classified the bout as a "prizefight," which was illegal under British law. However, they were eventually discharged when Crown Counsel Sir Peter Edlin determined that a bout held under Queensbury Rules was a "boxing contest" and not a "prize fight." 17 January 1910 Odgen Standard: [1].
