Jack Root beat Fred Russell by PTS in round 10 of 10

  • Date: 1906-02-26
  • Location: Kalamazoo AC, Kalamazoo, Michigan, USA
  • Referee: Joe Coffey
  • San Francisco Call report: [1]

Reported as a particularly vicious fight with Russell determined to KO his more ring-wise opponent rather than risk a decision that ringrats had predicted was likely to go Root's way. At one point, in the wild 7th round, both men plunged through the ropes to the floor below, barely escaping serious injury. Russell, notorious as a one-armed puncher with a big right, surprised Root by frequently using a straight left to the head and hook to the body. Root, the accomplished ring-scientist, fended off most of the bigger man's assault, landing lefts and rights with pinpoint accuracy. Russell, who generally tipped the Fairbanks at 215 lbs, outweighed Root by more than 20 pounds.
