After two slow rounds, Gibbons opened up in the 3rd round, and floored McCarthy with a right hand for a seven-count. McCarthy came out for the 4th round, still in bad shape, after hitting him with several more shots, Gibbons put him down again with a left hook. McCarthy rose at the count of five, but was on the verge of being finished, when the bout was finished.
