Fight:992779
Whittaker, for his first fight came out strongly with a stiff left hook to the mongrels head although was partly blocked by a good defence.
At this stage of the fight whittaker continued on the attack and landed some good blows. There is no doubt that he was much the busier fighter and clearly won the first round.
The second round started in a similar fashion with whittaker on the attack but it was clear that the mongrel was a very tough opponent and took all that whittaker threw. Monagel's corner was at this stage urging their fighter to go forward. Whittaker although had 190 amataur fights was inactive for a period of four (4) years prior to this fight and in his professional debut. He called on expierience but condition was staring to show.
Monagle's toughness as a fighter was evident as he showed little signs of fatigue although the face showed a slightly different story.
The third round started in a hurry with both fighters coming out hard however whittaker was starting to show fatigue and with monagle's corner urging their fighter to press forward it was much a more even round without either boxer dominating. Whittaker was at this stage although throwing good punches was showing the signs of a previously inactive fighter making his pro debut at 37 years of age. He seembed to do enough to win the round.
Round four was again an realively even round however whittaker appeared to land the clearer punches but monagle was much busier with whittaker fatigueing quickly. He was no doubt glad to hear the final bell.
The fight was called a draw by all judges and was a fair decision in the eyes of this observer however to look at the fighters faces after the fight some might say that whittaker came out on top.
Both fighters would have been clearly better on another day given that it was monagle's first figh back from a broken hand and it was whittaker's first professional fight after a a four year layoff.
Both men to this day have the utmost respect for each others ability
