Jack Dempsey upon the closure of his New York restaurant: 6 October 1974. He closed it after a lengthy bout with his landlord, who wanted to raise the rent from $85,000 to $120,000 per year. Dempsey removed the famous James Montgomery Flagg artwork, for which he had paid $25,000, and noted that the Smithsonian Institute wanted it.
