"Teruo Kosaka of Japan staged a stunning upset Monday night, outslugging champion Flash Elorde of the Philippines to win the Orient lightweight title on a split decision. The 21 year old Japanese lightweight champ fought like a tiger the last two rounds to eke out the victory. Elorde, world junior lightweight champion, had held the Orient title since 1958 and was making his 8th defense. Elorde opened a cut over Kosaka's left eye in the 9th round. Although it bothered the challenger, Kosaka continued to go all out. Kosaka maintained the pace as the pursuer in the 11th. The two slugged away until the final bell when Kosaka wound it up with a solid left to the jaw." -Associated Press

Post-fight comment
- "I don't think Elorde lost. Kosaka fought a far better fight than in their first fight in Manila last September, but that doesn't mean he won tonight." -Lope Sorreal, Elorde's manager
