Grant appeared to be in good shape, but had little to offer against the much faster Patterson. Patterson wore down Grant through the first four rounds, with well placed shots. In the 5th, a left hand to the body floored Grant for a four count. As Grant went to the center of the ring, to resume fighting, one of his cornermen requested that the fight be stopped.
Though the corner could not end a fight in New York under these means, referee Barney Felix stopped the bout anyway, claiming that he was doing so under his own volition.
