Francesco Pianeta of Italy retained the European Union's version of the European Heavyweight title with an eighth round stoppage over former British Commonwealth heavyweight champion Matt Skelton. Youth defeated age here, with the faster Pianeta, now 19-0-1 with 12 KOs, landing combinations on the slower Skelton, who at age 42 couldn't throw as many punches as his youthful opponent, and lost for the third time in his last four bouts. Skelton retired on his stool with an injured hand at the end of round eight.
