Brother of Stanley Poreda, Frank Poreda reportedly had been schooled by Gene Tunney for 14 months as an amateur. He fought a number of military (non-pro) bouts in Washington state during 1943. Although some of these bouts have made it into the Ring Record Book, these were considered either amateur bouts or purely military bouts; they were not considered professional fights.

See, for example, these 1943 Bremerton shows:

  • March 9: won over Johnny O'Shea
  • April 6: TKO-4 Willie Brown (former Golden Gloves Champion)
  • May 4: won over Joe Bettina
  • July 20: W-10 Ernie Griffin (for the mythical "Pacific Northwest Servicemen's Heavyweight Title")

A photo of Poreda can be found in the May 2, 1943 Tacoma News Tribune newspaper.
