After he retired from the ring Bob sustained a serious hip injury that crippled him, this along with heavy financial losses during the Great Depression, left him peddling newspapers on street corners in Dayton. When Bob died, his body was unclaimed, and he was buried in a potter's grave. Bob was reportedly 46 years old at his death.

After the Dayton boxing community became aware of Bob's plight, money was raised to rebury him at Memorial Park in Dayton.
