Filippone Versus Kilfian Light Heavyweight Bout
In a close, quiet technical bout, light heavyweight prospect and police officer Frankie Philippone won a narrow but unanimous decision over Harley 'Sandman' Kilfian, a tall fighter with a Mohawk hair cut and a winning record. A defensive Filippone spent nearly the entire six rounds in center ring working on the inside to the body, effectively neutralizing Kilfian's counterattacks with a tight defense, and blocking most shots which Kilfian attempted. Kilfian, who also had a good defense, was also aggressive but missed the majority of his counter attempts. Kilfian was slightly outpointed by a slightly more aggressive Filippone, but the bout was very exciting and very close. Kilfian perhaps did abit better on rare occasion when Filippone got caught on the ropes, but clinches quickly resulted. Good match up by longtime promoter Diane Lee Fischer on the undercard of Dorin Spivey versus Victor Vasquez NABA lightweight title at Tropicana Hotel and Casino in Atlantic City. If Kilfian had turned one more round in his favor, the bout would have been a majority draw. However, scoring appeared fair and correct by the New Jersey State Athletic Commission. Close bout.
