  • August 26, 1901. Russell was scheduled to box 8 rounds with Jack Fogarty of Boston at the Yakima Armoury but the license was pulled at the last minute by local authorities.
  • Report in the Jamestown Weekly mentioned a scheduled bout on Dec 26, 1901 between Russell and Tom Sharkey.
  • Dec 29, 1901 said to be set to fight Wild Bill Hanrahan six rounds the following night at the American Club in Chicago.
  • Spent some time in 1905 on the vaudeville circuit boxing all-comers for 4 rounds, $50 to the winner, waiting for his chance at the big money. His manager made several attempts to match his boy with Jim McCormick who was also in the area, but was rebuffed repeatedly.
  • Was scheduled to box 20 rounds with Prof. Jack Curley at the Yakima Theatre on July 4th, 1905. Result unknown.

Prior to his bout with Jack Root in February of 1906, Russell had spent some time in Philadelphia trying in vain to get a match with either Jack Johnson or Gus Ruhlin. Promoters apparently showed little interest.

  • March 21, 1906. Russell tried his hand at catch-as-catch can wrestling and lost two out of three falls to John J. Rooney.

The loss to Root seemed to have sunk him as a viable marquee opponent for the top-notchers and his name fades from the news.
