- Date: 1949-02-04
- Location: Chicago Stadium, Chicago, Illinois, USA
- Referee: Bernie Weismann
"Freddie Dawson, 25-year-old Chicago slugger has hit the big time. He jumped into the No. 1 contender's spot of both the lightweight and welterweight divisions last night by scoring a surprising 6th round TKO over rugged Bernard Docusen of New Orleans. Docusen, who took Sugar Ray Robinson the 15-round distance in Chicago last summer, was stopped by Dawson's belting lefts and rights. Dawson, an 11-5 underdog, gave his 22-year-old opponent a terrific beating in the 4th round, sending him reeling into the ropes. But the dogged Docusen straightened out to exchange blows with Dawson in the 5th and kept the crowd in Chicago Stadium cheering. After two minutes in the 6th, Dawson unloosed a sizzling attack forcing Docusen to retreat. Then he caught him, dropping him for a nine-count with a left to the chin. Docusen struggled up and Dawson charged in for the kill. It was then referee Bernie Weissman stopped the one-sided bout." -Associated Press
