Freddie Gilroy 116 lbs beat Bernie Taylor 117 lbs by KO in round 5 of 15
- Date: 1959-12-05
- Location: Kings Hall, Belfast, Northern Ireland, United Kingdom
- Referee: Frank Wilson
"Belfast's Freddie Gilroy, 116 1/2, retained the British Empire bantamweight title Saturday night by knocking out Bernie Taylor, 117 1/4, of South Africa in the 5th round. The stocky Gilroy outclassed the rangy south African on sheer power. A combination of lefts and rights dropped Taylor toward the end of the 5th round. He staggered to his feet just after referee Frank Wilson signaled the knockout. Gilroy fought like a tiger throughout the abruptly ended fight and never allowed the South African to throw his big punches. Taylor, five inches taller than the hometown boy, was counted out at 2:50 of the 5th round." -Associated Press
