  • Date: 1936-11-17
  • Location: Olympic Auditorium, Los Angeles, California, USA
  • Referee: Charley Randolph
  • "Steele used up something like half dozen assorted left hooks and right crosses before a towel floated into the ring from the Lesnevich corner. The referee used it to wipe the blood off Lesnevich's face.... Lesnevich drew a tremendous cheer even in defeat." Tacoma News Tribune.
  • "Freddie Steele, middleweight champ, scored a TKO over Gus Lesnevich of Hackensack, N.J., in the 2nd round of a non-title 10 round bout tonight before 10,000 fans at the Olympic Auditorium. Lesnevich's handlers threw the towel into the ring after 1:12 of the 2nd round had elapsed. Steele smacked Lesnevich to the floor twice in the opening stanza, opening an ugly gash over Lesnevich's right eye and starting his nose bleeding. Coming out for the 2nd round, Steele dropped him again, and, pounding hard left hooks, opened an old cut over the Russian's left eye. His face was a mask of blood as the towel sailed into the ring." - Associated Press
  • The promoter of this show, Joe Waterman, would tell the Tacoma News-Tribune, shortly before his death in 1949, that Steele's performance was the finest he ever saw in his 40-plus years in boxing.
