According to the Portland Oregonian, the bout was even through the first five rounds. In the fifth Rivers cracked Steele with a hard right to the jaw, before Steele responded with a left hook to the body. After landing the punch Steele took a knee, and appeared dazed. Rivers then pounded Steele during a period of infighting. All of sudden Rivers dropped to his knee in a neutral corner and whispered something to Referee Tom Louttit, who stopped the bout. Joe Waterman's first main event of his third stint as a matchmaker/promoter in Portland.
