Freddie Steele 158 lbs beat Paul Pirrone 162 lbs by TKO at 1:57 in round 1 of 10

  • Date: 1937-03-02
  • Location: Convention Hall, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, USA
  • Referee: Spud Murphy

"Middleweight champion Freddie Steele of Tacoma, Wash., knocked down Paul Pirrone of Cleveland five times in the first round before the scheduled 10 round fight was stopped by the referee Tuesday night. Steele threw the first punch of the fight, a hard left hook, and it dumped Pirrone to the canvas. When he got up Paul showed his only offense, charging Steele to the ropes with a flurry of rights and lefts. But Freddie landed that same hook and Pirrone went down again. The dazed Pirrone bounced up and took the identical blow for his third trip. Steele accomplished the last two knockdowns with straight rights." -United Press
