- "Boy, that punch was a honey." -Freddie Steele, on the right hand Krieger landed just before the bell ended the 10th round.
Steele was making his first local appearance in nine months, amid rumors that he was a shell of the fighter that he once was. Steele was also trying to show local fans, that his broken breastbone was adequately healed.
Krieger fought almost entirely out of a crouch during the bout, and had Steele's nose bleeding in the 2nd round. Steele boxed effectively in the first five rounds though, winning rounds and scoring points with his jab, but finding himself unable to land the right hand on Krieger. Krieger began to come on in the 6th round, and began to reach Steele, as neither man showed a decisive advantage through the 9th round.
In the 10th, Krieger nailed Steele with a good shot, that made Steele spit out his mouthpiece, with two minutes left. At the close of the 10th round, Krieger hit Steele with a right hand behind the ear, that sent Steele spinning into the ropes. Steele recovered though, and was trading with Krieger at the final bell.
Krieger finished the bout with his left eye nearly swollen shut; and Steele finished with a bloody nose, and swelling under his right eye.
