Fought fifteen fights as a professional between 1946 and 1951, his last fight against Ronnie Meyer in Germiston April 20, 1951. He was trained by Joe Rosella most of his professional career. He was born near Bloemhof and spent his childhood on the diamond fields in South Africa. The family settled in La Rochelle in the South of Johannesburg and Storbeck joined the Booysens boxing club. He came from a long line of boxers including Fred, Bob, Alec and Harry Storbeck.

After retiring from the ring, he continued training several boxers. The likes of Dawid Hamman and Johnny van der Colff being some of the most notable. "Oom Fred" maintained good relationships with all and sundry in the boxing fraternity, and over the years his children became used to having illustrious boxing names as houseguests. The animated boxing talk on these occasions was something that fascinated all the kids around the table. Until the sixties a boxing ring was a permanent feature in the Storbeck backyard, and many a dispute was settled once and for all, with "Oom Fred" being the referee.
