Garrett Wilson 190 lbs beat Chuck Mussachio 183 lbs by KO at 0:41 in round 12 of 12

Bout Summary

Mussachio was ahead on points over Wilson going into the twelfth and final round. After getting knocked out for the first time in his career, Mussachio said he was returning to light heavyweight for good. Technically, Mussachio appeared to win every round with a consistent left jab while keeping out of range, except the fifth and the tenth-won by Wilson by landing some wild power shots. Power wise, Wilson proved his record deceiving, as he had enough power to take Mussachio out with one punch. Wilson perhaps earned a title shot at one of the world title belts by virtue of his win. The fight was clean. The fighters embraced each other in friendship after the bout, both agreeing on the ring microphone the bout and the outcome had been fair. It appeared Mussachio lost his wind from a body punch late in round eleven, and lost his wind again from a body punch at the bell of round eleven. He came out for round 12 but apparently (by his own admission after the bout) he had not recovered. His hands were down and he was backing up when he got caught by an overhand right. Former lightweight contender Nunzio Carto of Philadelphia, present at ringside, also identified a Mussachio flaw: fighting with his body turned, exposing himself to kidney punches, instead of squaring his stance and blocking punches with his shoulders, causing cumulative damage. Carto, 83, a former Golden Gloves champion, defeated all 20 of the opponents he faced between 1946 and 1948, winning his last eight bouts by unanimous decision.
