Gary Summerhays lost to Edgar Wallace by UD in round 10 of 10

"The fight ended in controversy, however, Edgar 'Bad News' Wallace, Phoenix, scored a unanimous 10-round decision Monday night over Canadian light heavyweight champ Gary Summerhays. The controversy stemmed from the final round, when Wallace suffered a deep cut on the forehead mid-way between his eyes. Referee Billy Sparks halted the fight and sent Wallace to his corner, where the ring doctor found Wallace fit to continue. But Wallace was allowed at least a minute for repair work on the cut, which resulted in cries of foul from Summerhays' corner. Meanwhile, Wallace's trainer, Paavo Katonen, claimed the cut was caused by an intentional butt, and the fight should have been stopped at that point with Wallace being declared the winner." -Associated Press

Post-fight comment

  • "I might have butted him, though I was landing some right hands about that time too. But there's no way it was intentional." -Gary Summerhays
