"Roddy MacDonald thought he had the Canadian light heavyweight championship in the bag until Gary Summerhays opened a nasty cut on the Cape Breton-born challenger to retain the title here Tuesday. MacDonald pummelled Summerhays during much of the early going, but the cut forced ring doctors to stop the fight at the end of six of the scheduled 12 rounds, dashing MacDonald's championship hopes. The cut came after Summerhays, fighting his way out of a 6th round assault by the aggressive young challenger, caught MacDonald with a combination at mid-round that seemed harmless at ringside. But when MacDonald turned around, blood spilled from the cut and it appeared even then there would be little hope of his coming out to fight the 7th round." -Canadian Press

  • Dr. Wayne Gorman informed the MacDonald corner that the cut on his right eyelid would require 4 to 6 stitches to close and that the fight had to be stopped.
  • Purses - Summerhays - $15,000, MacDonald - $8,000

Post-fight comment

  • "He's good and strong, you can feel his power and he's a heck of a good fighter. It's very unfortunate he got his eye cut, but it could have happened to anybody. It's the terrible thing about boxing." -Gary Summerhays
