  • "Last night, a crowd of about 6,500 packed the downtown bullring to watch Gaspar (Indio) Ortega sweep the scorecard while outpunching Tombstone Smith. The victory was Indio's 6th straight in Juarez. Smith, unable to land more than a handful of effective blows, used a flat-footed stance, trying for one good shot. But the opportunity never came. In the 3rd, Ortega raised a welt on Smith's left cheek, and by the 5th, the left eye was nearly closed and the right was badly battered. Ortega's only wound was a minor bruise near the left eye. But Ortega uncorked a strong flurry in the 8th and decked his opponent with a right to the jaw. The last frame ended in a downpour, and Ortega fans climbed into the ring at the final bell to carry off the Border favorite." -El Paso Herald-Post

    Post-fight comment

    • "His favorite punch - the left hook - did most of the damage. Smith looked sluggish, so I told Gaspar to bob-and-weave and work the left." -Nick Corby, Ortega's manager
