- The winner of this bout was to receive a bout with the winner of the upcoming Emile Griffith v Manny Gonzalez non-title 10-rounder in Houston. Gonzalez won the bout and, although this bout was officially a draw, it was Ortega who received the opportunity.
- Attendance - 2,009
- Gate - $4,190
- "It will go down in our official records as a draw. The number of points given each boxer have no significance except in figuring which boxer a judge favors." -Alton Erickson
"An unofficial ruling by Alton Erickson of the boxing and wrestling division of the State Bureau of Labor Statistics, confirmed that last night's Gaspar Ortega - Marshall Wells bout should have been declared a draw. The stage was set for the mass confusion following the bout when, early in the 10th round, Wells was floored by a low punch by Ortega. The Houston Negro was given a two-minute rest, and when action resumed, both went at it hammer and tongs in the best mixing of the entire fight." -Corpus Christi Caller-Times
