In a major upset, Gbenga Oloukun, a Nigerian fighting out of Hamburg, Germany, won a close eight round decision over the former WBO Heavyweight Champion Lamon Brewster. Oloukun, 17-1 with 10 kos, used an effective left jab to land sharp jabs on the head of Brewster, as well as left uppercuts, and won rounds one and two. Brewster won the third with right hand leads, but Oloukun came back with the left to win rounds four, five and six, and the bout. Brewster won the seventh and eighth as Oloukun faded, but his right hand bombs which landed had no effect. At time of this bout, Los Angeles' Brewster was ranked # 10 by the WBA and WBO. Although Brewster's 35-5 record included 30 knockouts, he tried in the later rounds but longer had the power to kayo an opponent knocked out in his previous bout. Discussion at ringside was that Brewster, who came on strong at bout's end, would have won this fight on points if the bout was scheduled for ten instead of eight.
