Round 2 knockdown of Humez

Gene Fullmer 158 lbs beat Charles Humez 160 lbs by UD in round 10 of 10

"Gene Fullmer of Utah won a unanimous decision and a probable shot at the world middleweight crown tonight in his 10 round bout with veteran Charles Humez of France at MSG. Fullmer's victory over the middleweight champion of Europe was a mild upset, for Humez had gone into the ring favored at 13-10. Humez marched forward in every round, but it was nimble Gene - plunging forward and back - who did the most damage and staggered his blood-smeared opponent three times. It was an excellent fight in which Humez bled freely from both brows until his face was mantled with blood, and Fullmer added to the gore with red rivulets that trickled from his forehead and nose and right ear. There were no knockdowns, but the Frenchman fell backwards heavily to the canvas in the 2nd round while pulling away from a punch." -United Press

  • "We want Sugar Ray Robinson and we won't settle for anything else. We're willing to guarantee Ray $100,000 at Salt Lake City or Ogden if the IBC can't make the match in New York." -Marv Jensen, Fullmer's manager
