"Ex-middleweight champion Gene Fullmer backpedalled his way into the title picture Friday night by winning a unanimous decision over Ralph (Tiger) Jones at Chicago Stadium. Fullmer retreated through most of the 10 rounds of the nationally televised match and came on strong in the final rounds to win the bout. Marv Jenson, Fullmer's manager, said his man's strategy called for Gene to retreat until Jones came out of his crouch. Jones moved in for a knockout from the opening bell but the Yonkers, N.Y., battler found himself on the short end when the two traded blows. By the middle of the fight, Jones quit pressing and was booed by the crowd of 2,679." -Associated Press
